I love the natural color of my hair, for example, but it took a long time for me to just let it be.

These days there are some things that I know that I know.

Through my experience, I’ve cultivated a strong understanding of health and of beauty. I’m more connected to my passion for writing. I have an eye for what looks good and elegant and just so. And I have some clear desires about what I’d like my daughter to understand about life.

Those things that you know, that wisdom that you have cultivated, it shines out more and more. It draws people to your light. That ever-present light that shines from within grows brighter with time, and that is why I believe beauty improves with age.

I’ll be seventy next year, and my goal is for your skin to look gorgeous at thirty, fabulous at forty, radiant at fifty, glowing at sixty, and just flat-out wonderful at every possible age. That is what you should expect from anything you put on your skin.

Your beauty can truly grow with age and you can have fabulous skin all through your life, but it takes paying close attention to the quality of your skincare. Fortunately, as we grow older, we become more discerning, and realize that quality in all things is what counts.

CREATING FABULOUS SKIN

Women come up to me at events and ask what foundation I wear because my skin looks so “amazing.” When they see that I don’t use foundation, and that I am often decades older than them, then we have a conversation about what makes skincare really work. Genuine, organic quality is everything. The key is how to find it.

That’s why I created Gaelle Organic. I know that organic skincare can create fabulous skin.

CHOOSING QUALITY

If you are not taking the time to read the ingredients, or if you accept on faith claims that products are “natural” or “organic,” you may be using products that don’t have the quality to give you the results you want.

“Trust and verify” is a good motto. I start by looking for the organic certification of the product. Does it just say it’s “organic” or is there third party proof that it is?

INGREDIENTS

After that, l look at the ingredient list. A lot of organic skincare uses alcohol as a preservative, but it takes about 14% of the product to preserve it with alcohol. This is not an option for me, as alcohol is too drying for the skin.

The ingredients will be listed in descending order of percentages, so I make sure the good stuff comes close to the top.

GLASS

The essential oils that are delivered to us at Gaelle Organic never come in plastic containers. The same goes for other quality oils. Plastic does not preserve their integrity. Facial yoga is an approach to anti-aging that costs nothing and can be done in your own time at home. At it’s best, it as an alternative to botox and face-lifts, especially if you start early on.

It works the deeper layers of the skin to increase circulation and bring more blood flow. That means more oxygen and nutrients coming into the skin, and more toxins going out of it. And just like the large yoga stretches we are familiar with, facial yoga tunes the body’s energy and healing potential, creating healthier skin. It takes in the region of 20 minutes to do the set of exercises recommended by Danielle Collins, an expert in facial yoga, and you need to do them pretty much every day. Creme SuperieureThe neck and decolleté are often first to show signs of aging. It is because they have thinner skin and lack oil glands. That’s why it’s always best to include your neck and decolleté in your anti-aging care.

Think of your face moisturizer as your face, neck and decolleté cream. Moisturizing will help prevent all these areas from showing signs of aging.

The skin under the eyes and around the mouth needs special attention, too. It is thinner skin that dries quicker and is more prone to develop fine lines. Apply extra moisturizer to these areas by going over them a second time, after the first layer has been absorbed. This will give protection for the delicate, thinner areas of skin, and will plump up fine lines so they disappear. Used like this, a good moisturizer will work well on all areas of the face.

The thinner skin on the neck and chest needs every bit as much care as the face. You can use the same cream as on your face. It will work just as well.

Your neck and chest will benefit enormously from exfoliating. Go gently, just as you would on any thinner, more delicate skin, but include exfoliating in your anti-aging care so your neck and chest stay as beautiful as your face.

Stretching can tighten and firm the neck. Lean your head back and bring your bottom lip over your top one. Feel the stretch. Hold it for ten seconds, then relax, and repeat ten times. This two minute exercise was reported by the Huffington Post in an article about anti-aging steps they recommend. Inflammation can be significantly reduced by eating specific (and delicious) foods. It’s not just a matter of reducing breakouts. Inflammation causes many ills that can be a major burden on our bodies and minds – and anything that pulls on our vitality shows in our skin and our appearance.

These foods will reduce inflammation without causing the side effects that come with medication. In fact, their side effects are greater vitality and better health.

WALNUTS and WILD-CAUGHT SALMON have high concentrations of fatty acids that are known to reduce inflammation. Vegetables can also be highly effective. In one study, BROCCOLI cut inflammation levels in half. ONIONS, GARLIC and TURMERIC have all been shown to reduce inflammation. So do the probiotics in YOGHURT, KEFIR and SAUERKRAUT.

It is easy to include more of these foods into our diet and for them to become part of our health and beauty program. Seemingly small changes can make a big difference over time.

Ayurveda, an ancient Hindu practice for cultivating physical, mental and spiritual health, categorizes people according to the way fire, earth, water and air are represented in their makeup. People with a dominance of fire or water will have different body types and health challenges than those who are more earthy or airy. This goes equally for skin. You don’t have to go overboard with juice fasting to detoxify your body. Simple changes to your diet can deliver powerful results, once they become part of your routine. The key is to make changes that become your new normal. That’s the best way to create optimal health.

Juicing is up there with exercise as a promoter of health and beauty. Fresh juice brims with antioxidants. There is no better way to absorb them. As you nurture yourself with fresh juice, your skin will glow with aliveness.

It is so easy to do. I use a Champion Juicer that I’ve had for years. It does not do as well with leafy vegetables as with crisper ones like celery and carrots, and sometimes a little pulp gets through, but I think this is pretty much par for the course, whatever juicer you use. I find it works best if I run the leafy vegetables through first.

I like to change the combination of fruit and vegetables depending on the season, what’s at the farmer’s market, and how I’m feeling. My staples are carrots, celery and apples; kale and beets, too. I add ginger, cilantro and parsley to spice it up. I use only organic produce, and work in things I would not normally cook with – daikon radish comes to mind. There plenty of exotic options. Dandelion greens have quite a following, though they can be a little bitter.

On really hot days, a blend of juiced watermelon and oranges is amazing.

You can really get into juicing. Once you start, it feels like drinking pure life force!
