Holiday stress can cause breakouts right when you least want them. Fortunately, there are simple ways to reduce stress while participating fully in the party season.

Dr. Andrew Weill MD told a meeting of the American College of Cardiology I was at in Hawaii that the single most important therapy he had encountered in his medical career was – breathing exercises. Right there and then, he led the audience in a simple practice of slower, deeper breathing and invited them to observe what it did for them.

It’s a super easy experiment to do yourself. Just by deliberately breathing into your abdomen, you can feel an immediate release of tension. Breathing deeper in an easy, relaxed way causes a cascade of good things to happen in your body and mind.

This can be very handy at any time, but it is especially helpful for transiting stressful periods – like the holiday season.

Liz Burns, a former Olympic athlete and fitness coach, has additional easy tips that can make all the difference to how you feel through the party season. For example, having a stash of nuts to snack on can help you avoid showing up to parties hungry so you don’t gorge on the fatty, salty food that’s there. And she suggests you be realistic about your schedule. It’s better to reduce your exercise or skip your exercise routine than to have it overburden a day with too many obligations. Stress, after all, is an inside job.

Happy Holidays!

Detoxing brings aliveness and illumination! Fortunately, there are simple ways you can detoxify as part of your normal daily life.

Sweating is good, especially in a sauna, and alternating heat from the sauna with a cold shower works wonders. If you don’t go to a health club with a sauna, you could think about buying a portable infrared sauna for use at home. I had one for years.

Herbs can help a lot. Dr. Schulze is the best source of detoxifying herbs and tinctures I have come across. If you get more ambitious, he has a 5-Day Detox Program on his website. I’ve done it and the herbs seem to make the cleanse easier to go through. You can check out his approach and buy cleansing teas and herbs here: https://www.herbdoc.com/.

Worry and stress are toxic. They create chemicals that break down collagen. I find a walk in nature clears my mind like nothing else. Anything that brings serenity to your mind will detoxify it. Meditation, music, whatever you pay attention to that shifts your mind into a relaxed state – that’s the royal road to anti-aging.

Here’s to a lifetime of health and beauty!

Happiness is the royal road to beauty. It is the nectar that makes us glow. A scented candle, flowers, soft lighting, photos of loved ones, our pets, walks in nature – these are just a few of the things that nurture our souls and our beauty.

Happiness can also be as simple as a warm hug. Hugs and cuddling release oxytocin, the feel-good hormone associated with increased optimism. It enhances immune response and reduces stress, letting the glow of our natural vitality shine through.

Prolonged hugs of 15 seconds or more work immediately. So find someone to hug, and hug long and often!

You can read more about the benefits of hugging in the article: Happiness is … a warm hug.

1. Checking Hydration

You can easily see if your skin is properly hydrated. Just pinch your cheeks. If fine lines appear above where you are pinching, your skin is dehydrated. The best thing to do is to drink more water and keep your skin moisturized with a good cream that will help prevent lines from forming.

2. Checking Collagen

If you see deep vertical lines when you pout your lips, you could use more collagen. Add foods with deep, vivid colors to your diet, especially green vegetables, and purple and red berries. Be sure to include foods rich in sulphur, required for collagen synthesis, like cucumber and celery.

The best way to go – eat a rainbow every day, and use an organic moisturizer like Creme Supérieure to feed your skin and restore its lustre.

Litsea essential oil, anyone? You may not have heard of it but you probably have used all kinds of preparations containing it. Unfortunately it is typically used in a heavily processed form, where it has been fractionated and chemically converted to citral, a generic fragrancing ingredient. Or, for that matter, lots of products use flat out synthetic citral, derived from turpentine or petroleum.

In its natural whole form though, litsea cubeba essential oil is a lovely ingredient. A few drops in the right formulation give a softly enticing citrus scent. Fresh, sweet, and lemony, like a softer version of lemon verbena.

It is known as the ‘Oil of Tranquility’ and aromatherapists use it to promote relaxation, mental clarity and restful sleep. On a mystical level, it is said that it helps to reconnect us with the wonder of childhood – the magic and the mystery and the fun – and that it taps into the spirit of rejuvenation. It is recommended for rituals of renewal and festivals during the transition of Spring.

As well as its lovely aroma, it has a cooling nature and a gentle astringency, meaning that it lightly draws the skin together and neutralizes any excess secretions. When used in skin care products, these properties help it to clear pores and reduce breakouts.

The litsea plant has been used in by Asian herbalists for centuries, and in Mandarin the tree is it is known as May Chang or ‘mountain pepper.’ Once the tree has shown off its fluffy yellow blossoms, little green fruits like peppercorns burst forth, which ripen through pink to a luscious deep purple. It’s these berries which yield the precious essential oil.

Maybe it’s time to give this fragrant botanical a try in its natural state? It’s just one of the gorgeous ingredients in our organic Crème Supérieure and Soap Supérieure.

Nadia Natali and her husband Enrico live off the grid in the wilderness outside Ojai where they offer Zen and cooking retreats, as well as the wisdom and serenity earned from a lifetime of exploring the frontiers of consciousness and modern life. We are so happy to be friends with them.

The EU has enacted new food labeling regulations that affect packaged goods as well as the unpackaged products available in farmers markets, restaurants and delis. The rules cover fourteen major allergens and require that they be listed prominently wherever they are used.

Milk is one of the fourteen, so it would appear on a label whenever it, or something made from it, is an ingredient – for example, as in “whey powder (milk).”

This follows on from the new cosmetic labeling regulations that came into effect in the EU earlier in 2014, reflecting a government that is more focused on consumer safety than we are accustomed to in the United States.

The main benefit of vitamins in skincare products is their role as antioxidants that reduce free radical damage and prevent the appearance of premature aging. But vitamins can help in other ways, according to esthetician Renée Rouleau, including stimulating collagen production, strengthening the skin’s barrier function, and brightening the complexion. You can find out more about her view of the benefits of Vitamins A, B3, C and E in skincare products in the article: The Vitamins Guide to Skin Care.

It’s such a joy to hear from people who love our skin care once they try it!

This message from a lovely lady called Lauren was so wonderful that I asked her if I could share it…

“Hi Gaelle,

I hope you are happy and well. I just wanted to share how absolutely in love I am with your products . I started using them a few weeks ago (the soap, toner, and sensitive skin moisturizer) and I cannot say enough good things.

I look forward to cleansing my skin morning and night and putting on my cream.

I have struggled with acne since I was a teenager and have tried tons and tons of different products. I have finally found exactly what I need.

Since I started using your products, my skin has cleared up dramatically. Now, I feel comfortable and more confident going out without foundation. For once my skin is almost completely clear and only has acne scarring.

My skin looks so much more radiant and youthful and I actually feel healthy using your products. It is so important to me that the products I use on my skin are not harmful to my body.

Switching to your products has inspired me to make a lot of positive, mindful choices and changes to my health and wellness routine.

I just wanted to say THANK YOU. For listening to your heart and for the effort you put into making and sharing products that WORK, that feel RIGHT & GOOD , are carefully crafted and ethically produced, and have major healing properties.

With love and gratitude,

Lauren S”
