The Path To Clean Beauty

For decades major companies have been coming out with skincare products that promise a lot but deliver little at a great cost. Unfortunately the focus has been on branding and not the quality of ingredients. The way we see it, Earth has been doing the research and development for millions of years. So why not trust in what nature has generously produced over the synthetic chemicals coming out of the cosmetic industry? Thankfully organic, cruelty-free and natural beauty is on the rise. Here we will discuss everything one should know about clean beauty swaps in order to make the switch to organic, green beauty.

Cleanser

Let’s start with cleansers, as any good skincare routine does. There are some popular bar soap companies that claim they do not test on animals, yet don’t display any cruelty-free certifications on their website. It may not seem like a big deal, but we believe in being transparent with our customers about our entire process. This is part of the reason we became certified cruelty-free by PETA and certified organic through EcoCert. Additionally, many of the primary ingredients of well known bar soap brands are much more drying than the nourishing oils that compose our Soap Supérieure. Toner

Toners are an important step to a beauty regimen as they help to prepare the skin for the proper ph condition. In addition, many popular brands still reportedly test their products on animals, so it’s important to always do your research. Exfoliant

Aging Skin is Thirsty Skin: Hydrating vs. Moisturizing

As the years pass, signs of aging inevitably appear as signatures of a life well-lived. Crows feet and sun spots crop up from days spent laughing and enjoying the sunshine. A few here and there are simple souvenirs from the winding road we’ve traveled, but many can be the skin’s way of asking for assistance.

Fine lines and wrinkles are not always due to aging, they’re often a sign of dehydration. It’s important to note that moisturizing and hydrating are not synonymous. In fact, one can think of the former as how we care for the skin from the outside, and the latter as care from within. Preventing dehydration is something we’ll get into shortly, however alleviating dryness is a task for skincare. Our best tips for external care and combatting dryness are following a simple regimen such as:

Massage Balm Supérieure into skin and remove with a warm wash cloth to cleanse away dirt, makeup and pollution.
Apply Toner Supérieure with a reusable cotton pad to balance the skin’s natural pH and leave skin refreshed.
Pat 1-2 drops of Serum Supérieure into skin to promote the skin’s elasticity and prevent fine lines and dark spots.
Finish with either the Ultra Sensitive Creme or the Creme Supérieure to lock in moisture and protect against dryness.

Essentially, increasing our intake of water and organic greens while reducing the amount of acidic foods in our diet will ultimately result in a more hydrated complexion and a more healthy you. Three Steps for Deep Pore Cleansing

We all experience clogged pores from time to time. To nurture smooth, healthy skin it’s essential to remove the build up and let your skin breath. These three steps are for whenever you want to incorporate deep pore cleansing into your routine. They are especially helpful if you have large pores that have become clogged.

Step 1: Steaming Pores

Steaming is the best way to unclog pores and deeply cleanse them. It’s easy to do and works well. Start by boiling a pot of water; put it into a bowl and let it sit for a couple of minutes. Then add two or three drops of your favorite essential oil. Eucalyptus, Tea Tree and Lavender are excellent options for revitalizing and soothing the complexion.

Place a small towel over your face and lean over the bowl so the steam can do its work. Steam for at least 5 minutes. If you have clogged pores near your nose, it can take 15 minutes to get the full benefit. Try incorporating this into your routine at least once a week to see long term benefits.

Step 2: Exfoliating and Purifying Pores

Next step is to exfoliate. Give yourself a 30-Second Facial with Exfoliant Supérieure. Its finely-milled French sea salt will offer deep pore cleansing and purification.

How I Found The Best Natural Exfoliator

In this picture from my modeling days, my skin looks lovely and clear. I have to say though, that it wasn’t always like that.

Even while I was rushing from one photoshoot to another, I lived in dread of my skin erupting into an outburst of acne at just the wrong moment.

But one of those breakouts, which came at the worst possible moment, led me to the solution that would change my skin, and philosophy, forever.

Into the Dead Sea

I had been hired by the German magazine Der Spiegel for a swimsuit feature to be shot in the Dead Sea. The day before the shoot, I broke out in spots. My face, my neck, my chest- everywhere!

I slapped heavy makeup over my pimples, and hoped for the best. But, as soon as the art director had us move into the water, the makeup all washed off.

The Dead Sea Salts Cleared My Skin

Then the miracle happened! As soon as it was immersed in those biblical waters, rich with salts and minerals, my skin started to clear. In just ten minutes the skin of my chest was smooth again.

Tentatively, I patted the water onto my face. Almost immediately, that skin, too, started to calm and soothe. By the time the photographer was ready to shoot, my skin was completely clear, and no-one had ever noticed otherwise.

The salt water had penetrated into my pores, bathing them with antiseptic minerals. My skin could really breathe and my complexion totally cleared. It felt like such a miracle, and it woke me to the healing power of mineral salts.

Then I Discovered Breton Sea Salt

When I formulated Exfoliant Superiéure, I turned first to Dead Sea Salt as a natural exfoliator. I knew it made a fabulous detoxing bath. But I found the crystals to be too rough for my skin when used as a face scrub. So I steered my research towards gentler options. I discovered the gorgeous fine-milled salts of the Breton region of France.

The salts are used as a gentle face scrub to loosen dead cells that otherwise cause skin to look tired and dull. They deeply cleanse the pores, purifying and disinfecting them. I combined these beautiful salts with soothing Aloe Vera juice, cleansing Jojoba oil, and other organic emollients, to make a deeply cleansing and nourishing exfoliant which is suitable for all skin types.

And for a Gentle, Natural Peel…

To complete the product, I added Willow Bark Extract, a natural source of β-hydroxy acid, also known as salicylic acid. In its natural form within willow bark extract, salicylic acid has fewer sensitivity risks than when used as an isolated synthetic ingredient. This lets Exfoliant Supérieure be used as a gentle, natural peel. Just leave it on the skin for twenty minutes or so after routine exfoliating and reveal healthy, luminous skin as nature intended.

How Many Creams Do You Really Need?

People are always asking me why I don’t make an eye cream, or a night cream, or a neck cream. How come we have only two creams? Our retailers say more creams would fill up their shelf space and be good for business- so why don’t we make more of them?

The fact is, there is no need for extra creams. Based on my 30 years experience as an esthetician, I don’t see the need for eye creams and night creams to properly look after your skin. For the most part, they are just marketing ploys. When you see through the hype, achieving beautiful skin becomes a lot simpler.

Eye Cream?

Why would you put a special cream on the thinner, more delicate skin under your eyes and then put a less-than-special cream on the rest of your face? Or, if a cream is not good enough to put on your more delicate skin, why would you use it anywhere on your face?

Of course, the skin under your eyes needs a really good moisturizer that has no harsh chemicals in it. But so does the rest of your face! All of your face will respond to loving care, and only the best is good enough for all of it.

That’s why I make creams that can be used on the thinnest, most delicate skin, such as under the eyes, and recommend it be used all over the face, neck and décolleté. A thin layer of one of our rich moisturizers will be sufficient for the majority of the skin, and adding a second layer to under eyes will provide the extra moisture this delicate skin is looking for.

Night Cream?

The same goes for night cream. You don’t need a different cream at night from the one that works for you in the daytime. The reason you may be seeing a different result from the cream you use at night is because your skin is protected from environmental stressors while you are in bed, and your body goes into healing mode while you are asleep. Your chemistry changes and your body, including your skin, restores itself. The results are caused by your body, not by your special night cream.

Less is More

The key is to find one good cream that really works for you and then use it, day and night, on your face, neck and décolleté. One good organic moisturizer will do it all.

The Trouble With Alcohol In Skincare

Even when I was younger with oily skin, I always found alcohol to be vey drying. Now that I have more mature skin, I never use it. Despite it’s harsh effect on the skin, it is still present in so many skincare products- including organic ones. Here’s where I’ll explain the trouble with alcohol in skincare.

It’s true that alcohol in skincare has benefits. It can give denser creams a lighter feel and it can give temporary relief to too much oiliness. It can even help some ingredients to penetrate more deeply. But the main reason it is used in organic skincare products is because it is one of the only effective preservatives allowed by the United States Department of Agriculture’s organic standard.

Good for Shelf Life, Not Your Complexion

While alcohol is good for the shelf life of products, it’s simply too harsh for the skin. It’s one of the reasons why people think organic skincare is not as effective as conventional, chemically-laden skincare. The alcohol in it degrades the benefits that are otherwise available from organic ingredients!

It also strips away the skin’s protective barrier which is how it helps some ingredients to penetrate deeper. This causes the skin to become more prone to dryness and signs of aging. As skin becomes more sensitive, it becomes less and less able to withstand the effects of alcohol, resulting in irritation and even rawness.

Tempting for Acne Sufferers, But Self-Defeating

Some people with oily skin are prone to acne and use alcohol-based toners to strip the excess oil from their skin. Unfortunately, this prompts the body to respond by increasing its oil production. This leads to a continuous, self-defeating cycle that could have been avoided to begin with.

Additionally, there are other problems with alcohol on the skin. It can reduce resistance to free radical damage – the very opposite of anti-aging, and another reason why organic skincare is often less effective than it should be.

Finding Organic Products Without Alcohol

When alcohol is used as a preservative in an organic product, it generally takes up about 14% of the volume of the product – it’s not just a few drops! So it really pays to look at the ingredient lists of products you are using on your skin. Avoid alcohols listed as “organic alcohol” or as ethanol, denatured, isopropyl, methanol or ethyl alcohol.

It is unfortunate that the U.S. organic standard pushes so many manufacturers to use alcohol as a preservative. Just because it is organic alcohol does not make it any better for your skin.
